Abstract

Through his work as a discus throw teacher, the researcher observed a weakness in students' performance when performing this difficult activity. The focus was largely on the skill aspect, excluding the mental aspect. Therefore, the researcher decided to find modern alternatives that would contribute to raising students' level in both practical and mental aspects, enabling them to learn the activity more quickly and effectively. Therefore, the Appleton model was used, which generates diverse ideas to achieve the desired goal. It is considered a modern model in the field of teaching track and field activities. It also contributes to the research sample's thinking, enabling them to achieve a good performance through the instructional units, increasing students' motivation to learn. The research aims to:

  1. Prepare instructional units based on the Appleton model to develop cognitive focus and learn the discus throw for students.
  2. Identify the impact of instructional units prepared according to the Appleton model on developing cognitive focus and learning the discus throw for students.

The conclusions are:

  1. The Appleton model (experimental group) and the method used by the subject teacher (control group) had a positive impact on developing cognitive focus and learning the effectiveness of discus throwing among students.
  2. The members of the experimental group (Appleton model) outperformed the members of the control group (control method) in developing cognitive focus and learning the effectiveness of discus throwing among students.
  3. The Appleton model contributed to reducing the burden on the teacher during the lesson and increased the excitement and suspense in the students' application of the activity.
